message from Colin Earnshaw at 'North Highland Harriers'

Could you let HHR know that our next run is on the Sunday 28th March in Golspie. It entails a good climb up to Ben Bhraggie via the Wildcat mountain bike route and some road running (kept to a minimum!) then a fast descent down via a rough path and then back onto the mountain bike route. The map is linked on our website. The first runners are off at 1000hrs with the rest handicapped taking into account there 'rough' minute/mile pace. If you could possibly let me know if any HHR are interested so I can get the guy that does the start times etc to include you in the start list.

Meall a'Bhuchaille Race

We did not expect 200 plus runners. Our resources for a small club were stretched as long as the continuous queue waiting for coffee and registration.

Badaguish was the race headquarters and a new route was on order, probably just as well as many permissions were required for the sensitive ridge on Meall a’ Bhuachaille.

Local man Alan did some ground work and sorted out the route of the first climb.

The rest of the route followed the general pattern of the old course and the whole package consisted of what you would encounter on a real hill day except it was compressed into round about an hour .

The ground vibrated as 200+ runners set of in harmony from the start line on the forest track outside Badaguish. The first top was 1.5 miles away and 1300 ft up, it must have seemed like much longer for the runners moving up the heather covered hillside. It was quite a site to see the runners snake up stretched from near top to bottom of the hill. The new route is also a spectators route as from the same vantage point outside Badaguish you can view the whole of the first climb then ridge to Craggan Dubh and with binoculars the top part of Meall a’ Bhuachaille. It is always a nervous wait for the first runner to come in especially so on a new route, so it was great to see Andy Symonds approaching the finish with Robbie Simpson a close second and Tom Owens third. The womens race was won by Catriona Buchanan followed in by Clair whitehead and Jacqui Higginbottom

It was great to see the young ones shining through and what stars they were. Aw well better finish reading Flanagan's run and see if it can fire me up for next year and that new age group, did some one say M50, surely not.

26th August

Inverness Harrier Jonny Muir published his first book this week after penning an account of an extraordinary 5,000-mile cycling and walking odyssey.

In the first journey of its kind, Jonny visited the highest point of the 92 historic counties in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Heights of Madness, a light-hearted and quirky account of the three-month adventure, has been published by London-based publisher Metro Books.

Among the summits visited by Jonny were Inverness-shire's Ben Nevis, Ben Macdui, which is the summit of Aberdeenshire and Banffshire, Mount Battack, in Kincardineshire, and Argyll's Bidean Nam Bian.

He also scaled highest points in Angus, Caithness, Fife, Moray, Nairnshire, Perthshire, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland, as well as Orkney and Shetland.

The journey, which he undertook in 2006, started on Brown Willy, the summit of Cornwall, and finished on Ben Nevis, 92 days later.

He was forced to cross a live military firing zone to reach the highest point in Yorkshire, was savaged by midges in the Cairngorms and was fortunate not to be seriously injured after a number of falls from his bicycle.

The only times he did not travel under his own steam - on foot or by bicycle - was when he caught ferries to Scottish islands and Northern Ireland.

Recent results round up

It being summer an all, apparently, it is difficult to keep up with all the results so here is a quick round up of whos been up to what and where.

Jim Hall was at Largo Law on the 8th August to come home a very solid 18th about 10 minutes down on the winner Mark Harris of Fife. Looking at the results the numer of vets is striking with only 6 senoirs in the top 30. Is it that the youth of today are soft or was the race start accessible by bus? ; 0)

Neil Speight and Dave Cummins (running for Shetts) both had good runs bagging all 9 munros around Glen Shee at the Glen Shee 9 hill race. The result means that Dave is well up there in the overall table for Chris Upson's long distance race league.

Hellmsdale Highland Games with it's good prizes is always an incentive and there was a good turn out from HHR. Colin Donnelly (LAC) won with Dave Cummins and Ross Bannerman close behind. Highland also bagged the first two spots in the female race with Roxy winning from Ali Thomas. Results here.

Ross followed this good result with a win at Wideford Hill Race on Orkney. Ross reported that this is a good race mostly on trails with a small section of heather scrambling at the top.

17th August

Isle of Mull Half Marathon

Paul Raistrick kept his form from Fyrish Hill race

to win the Isle Of Mull Half in a blistering time of 1:10:02 in

a race for the line from Robert Gilroy who finished in 1:10:10.

Good luck to everybody taking part in the 'Great Wilderness Challenge' this weekend.

8th August

Strathpeffer Highland Games Race

A big turn out from the Highlanders, which made for a fantastic race. The weather was dry and sunny. Perhaps even a bit too warm for some. Colin Donnelly (LAC) romped home in first and was last seen heading back west with a bulging wallet. Places 2-5 were hotly contested with only 30 seconds covering them at the end. Fortunately Roxy made sure Ross didn't have to go hungry with an impressive win in the female category. Roxy also won the female one lap race. Fran demonstrated why he is a hill runner in the male equivalent event - battling it out with an overweight dutchman to come joint 20th.

Strathconon Hill Race

Graeme Campbell had a comfortable win but was pushed very close to the top by Angus Macleod. Norman Kelman ( a previous winner) had a strong run from the top to finish 2nd. Roxy Bannerman was 1st lady despite contouring way too low from the 1st flag, much to the amusement of Alex and Ian, some way above her.

I'm not very confident of results to follow.

The race start of 12.15 and not 11 meant the Creag Dubh Hill race had to be abondened.

Fyrish Hill Race

Warm, sunny and very dry conditions with 30+ competing.

Paul Raistrick won in a new record of 51.52 for the revised course (3 years ago) and Alex Keith came in 2nd in a time of 55.04.

Only 50 yards seperated the 1st two on the ascent at the top but a brief 30 second look for the summit by Alex! and a storming descent from Paul led to a very fast, comfortable win.

4th April

Knockfarrel Hill Race

Balmy conditions through the week gave way to heavy showers and a strong north westerly, and underfoot conditions were another challenge to contend with.

With 45 experienced competitors - at the front, the might of Colin Donnelly (LAC) was up against recent Craig Dunain winner Graham Bee (Fife AC) and a titanic battle ensued. Colin held on after a very close finish with Alex Keith not far behind in third. Jacqui Higginbottom (Carnethy) also had a strong run and finished exactly a minute ahead of second-placed Roxy Bannerman (HHR) with Doreen Campbell (Inverness Harriers) in third.

The first team was HHR with five in the top eight places.

Special thanks must go to Ray Wilby and his son Andrew, after spending many hours clearing this classic route (an annual problem with gorse bush encroachment!) and also to Liz Wilby for organising an excellent after-race spread in very limited outdoor facilities. Thanks also to all our marshals, for enduring the conditions and providing encouragement
